Les Ellery moved to Canada in 1970 he already had a solid
background in machining including years of training, machining
experience with large multi-national firms such as Tata
and British Steel. His career had taken him to India, England
and Germany where his machining skills, problem solving
abilities and work ethic helped him to advance quickly.
When Les moved his young family to Canada his plan was to
continue building his career in manufacturing but the opportunities
to do so weren't what he was hoping for. His skills made
it easy to find work but he found himself too often at the
mercy of layoffs and the wages he earned weren't enough
to give his family the opportunities he wanted for them.
Eventually Les decided that the only way to get ahead would
be to work for himself so together with his wife (Patience),
they scraped together what they could and took a chance
building their own future.
When Les Ellery started Ellery Machining in 1978 his only
goals were to generate a steady income and to provide for
his family. The original shop occupied a small corner of
a warehouse in Cloverdale, British Columbia. Les had a drill
press, a manual lathe and alot of faith that things would
Today the company goes by the name Ellery "Manufacturing"
with its production facility (20,000 Square Feet) and offices
located in the Port Kells industrial area of Surrey, British
Columbia. The business employs 25 fulltime employees including
Les' sons (Paul, Dave & Nick), his eldest daughter (Anne)
and one of his many grandchildren (Spencer).
The company's current focus is on providing custom machining,
fabrication and project management services for major industrial
customers and leading edge engineering firms. Ellery Manufacturing
is proud to produce high quality work for a wide variety
of industries including oil and gas, liquid natural gas,
energy (wind, solar and hydro), mining, forestry, construction,
marine, defense & aerospace.
At the age of 86 Les still came to work a couple times each
week to visit. He passed away in March 2018, just a few
days before the 40th anniversay of the company he loved.
The Ellery family is extremely proud of what Les and Patience
built and they continue to grow their legacy with Paul Ellery
now managing day to day operations.
